How to Get the Best Performance from Your Traxxas Slash Suspension

The Traxxas Slash handles well out of the box — Traxxas has decades of experience setting up bashing trucks and the factory geometry is a reasonable starting point. But "reasonable starting point" isn't the same as optimal. With some basic setup work and the right upgrades, your Slash can feel dramatically more planted, predictable, and controllable. Here's how to get there.

Understanding Traxxas Slash Suspension Basics

The Slash uses a double wishbone (A-arm) front suspension and a trailing arm rear suspension. Both ends are independently sprung with oil-filled shocks. The adjustable geometry parameters are:

  • Camber: How much the wheels tilt inward or outward when viewed from the front. Negative camber (tops leaning inward) is typical for bashing and track use.
  • Toe: Whether the front edges of the wheels point inward (toe-in) or outward (toe-out) when viewed from above. Toe affects straight-line stability and turn-in response.
  • Spring preload: How much the spring is compressed at rest. Affects ride height and how quickly the suspension responds to bumps.
  • Shock damping: The rate at which the shock absorber resists movement. Controlled by shock oil viscosity — heavier oil means more damping and slower response.

All of these interact. A change in camber affects the effective contact patch. A change in shock damping changes how the truck transfers weight in corners. Work methodically: change one thing at a time and note the result.

The Foundation — Get Your Upgrades Right First

Here's the thing about suspension tuning that most guides skip: you cannot tune plastic suspension accurately. Stock plastic shock towers flex under load, shifting your effective geometry. Plastic C-hubs develop slop over time, changing your camber curve mid-corner. Plastic turnbuckles with imprecise rod ends can't hold a repeatable geometry setting.

Before investing time in suspension setup, make sure you have:

  • Aluminium shock towers (front and rear): Rigid mounting points are the foundation. Without them, your shock angles shift under load.
  • Aluminium turnbuckles with quality rod ends: You need to be able to measure and set geometry precisely and have it hold. Stock turnbuckles don't allow this reliably.
  • Aluminium C-hubs (front): Eliminate slop in the front steering geometry for consistent camber curve.

With upgraded towers and turnbuckles, your setup will hold. Without them, you're chasing a moving target.

Setting Camber

Camber is how much your wheels tilt in or out. On a Slash, camber is adjusted by lengthening or shortening the upper camber links (turnbuckles connecting the upper A-arm to the shock tower).

How to measure: Use a camber gauge — a simple tool that presses against the wheel rim and reads the angle directly. They cost $10–15 at most hobby shops. Measure at ride height with the truck sitting flat on a surface.

Recommended starting point for bashing: 0 to 2 degrees negative camber at both ends. Negative camber means the tops of the wheels lean inward slightly. This gives a good balance of straight-line traction and cornering grip on typical bashing surfaces.

For track racing (oval, short course): 2–3 degrees negative front, 1–2 degrees negative rear. More negative camber improves cornering grip but reduces straight-line traction slightly.

To adjust: Lengthen the upper turnbuckle to add negative camber, shorten to reduce it. Make changes in small increments — a half-turn of the turnbuckle changes camber noticeably.

Setting Toe

Toe describes whether the front edges of your wheels point toward each other (toe-in) or away from each other (toe-out) when viewed from above. It's adjusted via the steering turnbuckles (front) and trailing arm turnbuckles (rear).

Toe-in (front edges closer together): Increases straight-line stability, reduces turn-in sensitivity. Good for high-speed bashing on smooth surfaces.

Toe-out (front edges further apart): Increases turn-in response and cornering aggressiveness. Can make the truck feel darty at high speed.

Recommended starting point: Front — 1–2mm toe-in. Rear — 2–3mm toe-in (fixed on most Slash configurations). Traxxas's factory setting is slightly toe-in on both ends, which is stable and forgiving for bashing. Don't change rear toe without a clear reason — it's a stability-critical setting.

To measure: Use a toe gauge or measure from the inside edge of the tyre at the front and rear of the rim. The front measurement should be slightly narrower than the rear for toe-in.

Shock Tuning

The Slash comes with oil-filled shocks — a genuine feature at this price point. They're adjustable in two ways: spring preload (via the adjustment collar at the top of the spring) and damping (via the viscosity of the oil inside the shock body).

Spring Preload

Preload affects ride height and initial spring engagement. Increasing preload raises the truck and makes the spring engage sooner. Decreasing preload lowers the truck and softens initial response. Use the Traxxas shock adjustment tool (a plastic pin spanner) to turn the preload collar. Both sides of each axle must be equal — use a ruler to measure ride height at each corner and set all four equal.

Starting recommendation: Factory setting. Adjust only after you've driven the truck and have a specific complaint (e.g., "it's bottoming out" means add preload; "it's too stiff over bumps" means reduce preload).

Shock Oil Viscosity

Shock oil is rated in cSt or weight (e.g., 30wt, 50wt). Heavier oil means more damping and slower, smoother shock movement. Lighter oil means less damping and faster, more reactive shocks.

Stock Slash shock oil: Typically around 30–35wt front and rear. This is a good all-around starting point.

For bashing on rough terrain: Heavier oil (40–50wt) gives smoother, more controlled landings and less bottoming-out.

For track racing on smooth surface: Lighter oil (20–30wt) gives more reactive suspension and better mechanical grip through corners.

To change shock oil, remove the shock from the truck, disassemble the lower cap, drain and refill with fresh oil, bleed air from the shaft by cycling it slowly before reassembling. Use quality silicone shock oil — not motor oil or general hydraulic fluid.

Differential Tuning

The Slash 4x4 has front, centre, and rear differentials. The Slash 2WD has one rear differential. Diff fluid viscosity affects how power is distributed and how the truck behaves in corners.

Thick diff fluid (100,000–300,000 cSt): Makes the diff act more like a locked axle. Better for traction on loose/rough surfaces, reduces inside wheel spin in corners, can make the truck push (understeer) slightly.

Thin diff fluid (3,000–10,000 cSt): More open diff behaviour. Better for technical cornering, allows wheels to rotate at different speeds freely, can increase throttle-induced oversteer.

Stock Slash diff fluid: Typically 30,000–50,000 cSt. A reasonable all-rounder. Most Australian bashers run thicker front fluid (100k+) for better traction on rough surfaces and leave rear at stock or slightly thicker (50–75k).

To change diff fluid, remove the differential from the drivetrain (refer to your Slash manual for the specific procedure), drain the old fluid, clean the internals, and refill with fresh silicone diff fluid. Diff fluid changes are more involved than shock oil changes — plan an hour for the first time.

The Setup Process Step by Step

Here's a practical sequence for getting your Slash dialled in:

  1. Fit your upgraded parts first. Shock towers, turnbuckles, C-hubs — these are your tuning foundation. Don't attempt precise setup on stock plastic.
  2. Set baseline geometry. 1–2 degrees negative camber at both ends. 1mm toe-in at the front. Factory ride height.
  3. Run a test session. Drive normally on your typical surface. Note what you don't like about the handling — is it loose under brakes? Understeering in corners? Bottoming out on landings?
  4. Make one change at a time. If it understeers, reduce front toe-in slightly. If it bottoms out on landings, add shock preload or increase oil weight. If it's loose and unpredictable at speed, add front toe-in.
  5. Test after each change. Resist the urge to change multiple things simultaneously — you won't know which change helped.

Suspension setup is iterative. It takes a few sessions to dial in, but the result is a truck that feels custom-tuned to your driving style and preferred terrain.

Final Thoughts

A well-set-up Slash on upgraded suspension parts is a significantly better truck than a stock one. The geometry is controllable, the handling is predictable, and you can push it harder with confidence. The investment in aluminium towers, turnbuckles, and C-hubs pays off immediately in the quality of setup work you can do.
